Measuring transmission/transaxle output or wheel speed, your VSS talks to the ECM which uses this information to modify engine functions such as ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, transmission shift points, and to initiate diagnostic routines. Wheel speed sensor input is typically also used for vehicle dynamics purposes such as anti-lock brakes, stability control, cruise control systems and traction control among others. As you can see, many of these functions keep you safe when behind the wheel, so it remains vitally important that you replace any faulty vehicle or wheel speed sensor when issues become apparent. In most cases, a faulty wheel or vehicle speed sensor will illuminate the check engine light on your dashboard.
